The Palacio de Bellas Artes concert hall houses some of Mexico's finest murals but it also has a small collection of Aztec artefacts that are worth seeing.
Construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral on the central Zócalo square began in 1573 and was completed only in 1813.

Excavation of the Aztec Teocali Temple close to the cathedral had only begun when this photo was taken in October 1979.
