In 1993, Livingston was an "in" destination for backpackers just like Khatmandu had been in the '60s. No roads reach here so getting in and out by boat was half the fun. Another boat took us up the Rio Dulce to the town of the same name where we took a bus to Guatamala city and then to Antigua.
Back in Antigua here is the Parque Central.
And one of Antigua's cobbled streets with the volcán Agua in the background.
After a couple more days of the Antigua night life, Naoko flew back to Japan via Los Angeles and I went north to visit another popular backpacker destination, Lago Atitlan.
Here is a view of the 3134 m Volcán Tolimán from Panajachel, the largest of several villages around the lake. It is also the only one that can be reached by a highway so it gets most of the tourist business.
The other villages can be reached by small passenger boats like this one in front of the 3020 m Volcán San Pedro. The villages of San Pedro de Laguna at the foot of this volcano and of Santiago Atitlan had been adopted by party going, pot smoking backpackers in 1993.
This was the view from the garden of my hotel in Santiago Atitlan...
... where these fun loving British girls were also staying. We had a ball!
All good things must come to an end and so did our Atitlan party.
